My four-year-old boxer has a "tag" or growth on his upper right leg near the elbow. I know boxers are prone to tumors, but the vet didn't seem inclined to take it off when I pointed it out to him. Should I be worried, or should I look for a new vet?
Veterinarians are guided by their experience when judging if a lesion such as your dog's requires removal. You must be guided by your faith in your vet's judgment when deciding whether or not to follow his or her advice. If you're uncertain, it's a good idea to get a second opinion while realizing you may need to seek a third if the first two are at odds. Having stated that, skin tags are fairly common and easily recognized. Chances are good that your vet's opinion is correct. If you would rest easier having this lesion removed, and if there are no unusual risks associated with anesthesia for your dog, and if the size and location of the skin tag present no technical difficulties for its removal, your vet would probably be amenable to performing this bit of cosmetic surgery for you. Ask him.
