For 2 months now, my 3year old bichon has a chronic problem with her skin mostly head and back of neck. My Vet. perscribed antibiotics and said they are hot spots. She is a inside dog so fleas ticks bugs are not the issue. Tried all kinds of topical cream. still breaks out and bleeds. Please, any bichon owner with similiar problems please contact us. I have a male bichon (her brother) who does not have this problem Thank you Bean

Dear Sheila, I own a 2 yr old Shih Tzu named Zoe also an inside dog. She had a similar skin condition a few months ago. Zoe began scratching her left ear alot and when I took her to the vet, she had an ear infection and was prescribed antibiotics. The next one week later, she showed signs of red scabby itchy skin around her head, ears and body. More antibiotics were prescribed. The antibiotics were not working at all! The VET did an allergy test on Zoe by taking blood and scraping her skin and sent it out to a lab. The lab report read Zoe was highly allergic to several grasses and weeds from our well groomed backyard. WOW, I was shocked. The Vet prescribed "Atopica" capsules given once daily after a meal, and "Hills Prescription Diet z/d ultra allergen-free dry dog food. The Vet also prescribed a shampoo for dogs with allergies. Talk to your vet about getting a lab test done on your dog and the results will shock you. Sounds like your dog has allergies and antibiotics will not cure the symptoms. Good luck! Maria and Zoe

Hi again Sheila, P.s., Sounds like your Vet blames everything on "hot spots", but he isn't curing your dogs and your dogs are suffering! Have you ever thought of seeking a 2nd opinion elsewhere? Please follow up my advise, it may help.

You might also want to look into food allergies. They sometimes cause itching and "hot spot" areas.
