Studying Rescue Dogs
A study funded by Ralston Purina Co. and the AKC Canine Health Foundation will track the health of the rescue dogs used at the World Trade Centers and Pentagon. The St. Louis Dispatch reports that as many as 350 search-and-rescue dogs will be monitored by veterinarians over the next three years.

University of Pennsylvania veterinarian, Dr. Cynthia Otto, will be participating in the study. She told the Dispatch that they would be looking for long-term effects on the dogs from the exposure to smoke, dust and asbestos and also for any behavioral problems that might be linked to the rescue work.

As a control group, Otto says she will use dogs that were not involved in rescue work at those sites. Otto herself worked at the collapsed World Trade Center site to help care for the dogs that needed veterinary attention.
