An I.D. Campaign
Merrill Chernov, a retired surgeon from Scottsdale was alarmed when he visited an animal shelter in Maricopa County. He saw so many abandoned animals that he decided to do something about it.

What Chernov did was to establish a non-profit organization and hand out free ID collars. He got a hospital supply company to make the collars, which are akin to what hospitals use as I.D. bracelets. They are plastic, adjustable collars that you can write on with ink.

His organization, People Savings Pets, educates the public and hands out these collars. So far, he has distributed 4-thousand of the free collars at schools, synagogues and churches. They are meant to be temporary IDs since Chernov stresses the importance of a permanent tag and license.

Chernov told the Arizona Republic that he hopes to spread his project across the United States. People Saving Pets can be reached at (602) 956-1560.
