Heed This Warning
If you live in an area inhabited by wolves, coyotes, or even mountain lions (which have been reported in California), it is wise to be vigilant when walking in a wooded area with your dog. In fact, you should never let your Fido off the leash.

The warning was sounded recently in Banff. The Calgary Sun reports that in a popular recreation spot near Lake Minnewanka, wolves attacked a family dog that was being walked off-leash. The dog died.

In most public parks, people are told not to let their dogs roam away. It is advice well worth taking. In some states in the U.S., families have lost small dogs to coyotes at night, which roam in from the woods and can snatch a small animal right out of the yard. Not to be ignored are hawks. Some raptors are strong enough to swoop down and grab a toy dog and take it away.

In Banff, the park warden told the Sun, "Taking your dog out in the bush is essentially cougar bait. People have to accept the consequences that come with that."

All of these dangers are scary. Knowing that they exist is important in protecting your Fido from unexpected tragedy.
