Fighting Canine Cancer
After losing her Rottweiler Kate to bone cancer, veterinarian Teresa Koogler was devastated. Kate was 11 years old, and Koogler felt she still had many years left. Koogler also knows that too many dogs die from cancer, and that more needs to be done. So she is creating the Kate Koogler Canine Cancer Research Fund.

The Perseus Foundation of Gaithersburg Maryland, a nonprofit organization that raises money for cancer research in animals, will administer the fund. The Foundation reports that nearly half of all dogs over the age of 10 will die from cancer. And although the funds raised from Koogler's efforts will go towards fighting all forms of the disease, she hopes that whatever new research develops regarding canine bone cancer (which affects mostly large-boned dogs) could be applied to human cases as well.
